Pans Labyrinth Sound Replacement

A complete sonic reimagination of a section from Pans Labyrinth - including all SFX, foley and score.

  • I aimed to be fluid with my direction, implementing atonality and an irregular arrangement, while avoiding my DAWs grid all-together.

  • By focusing on the idea of contrast throughout, and modulating elements such as pitch, dynamics, tempo, and timbre, I responded to the on-screen narrative cues, aiming to build a consistent thread of tension and release running between picture and sound.

  • Aiming to lean into the unsettling on screen atmosphere, I created a warped and deteriorated sonic aesthetic.

  • To enhance the unsettling tone and to compliment the on screen narrative, I adopted a somewhat non-western approach, working outside of a fixed key / tempo.

Overview of score

  • Due to the genre of this film and the horror-focused direction in which I was leaning, I thought it was important to incorporate ‘tactile’ foley that realistically responded to what was happening on screen.

  • I focused on creating a visceral and grounded atmosphere, using a mixture of my own foley recordings and some third-party samples when necessary.
